Traditional media losing revenues to social media
Traditional media, such as newspapers and magazines, are experiencing declining revenues due to rising
competition from social media, government officials and analysts say. Deputy Minister of Communications
De-Thi.com Tổng hợp 14 Đề thi Giữa kì 2 tiếng Anh Lớp 12 (Global Success) - Đáp án đầy đủ - De-Thi.com
Nguyen Huy Dung stated at a forum last Friday that newspapers and magazines saw their revenues decrease by
9.4% in the first nine months of last year.
The situation is even worse for radio and TV, which saw a 23% decline in revenue. It was mentioned that
most broadcast companies are not using all their advertisement slots because there is a lack of demand. Some
broadcasters sell advertisements for only a few minutes a day, even though the law allows them to use 10% of
their broadcast time for ads for non-subscribers and 5% for subscribers.
Advertisements remain the main source of income for media companies and could account for 90% of their
revenues. However, the rise of social media platforms like Facebook and Google is taking away their customers.
Some newspapers have tried to adopt a subscription model, but this approach is still new in Vietnam and brings
modest income. Analysts speaking at the forum also spoke about these challenges.
Nguyen Thanh Lam, another deputy communications minister, mentioned that the ministry plans to make
changes to the Journalism Law to help improve media companies' revenues. One of these changes is a mechanism
that would allow the government to pay for some content it wants to appear in newspapers. Other changes would
tighten copyright protection, as many media companies have long been affected by plagiarism. However, he added
that the most important changes must come from the media companies themselves. They need to rethink the way
they practice journalism and make money from it.

Ben: Okay, let's get started, Karen. We are going first tomorrow.
Karen: Okay Ben.The first topic is charities advertising more.
Ben: Hmm, advertising would help more people hear about charities, and the more people that know about them,
the more donations they'll get.
Karen: Yeah, that sounds right.
Ben: Okay, next. Businesses using more eco-friendly packing.
Karen: I think companies would get good publicity.
Ben: Agree.
Karen: They would also probably spend more money.
Ben: Good point, but they probably make more money from the publicity. I think the more eco-friendly packing
business is used, the more money they'll make.
Karen: Okay, you can talk about that.
Ben: Next, charities protesting more.
Karen: I think charities would get more publicity and maybe more donations.
Ben: I don't think so. Charities can get bad publicity from protesting.
Karen: You're right. Good point
Ben: Next people using gas-powered cars less.
Karen: That's easy. Gas-powered cars emit a lot of CO2 and make people's carbon footprints larger.
Ben: Yeah, but other presenters might say that. Let's say something more interesting. It also means more people
will drive electric cars. They still need to travel somehow.
Karen: True, and the more electric cars there are, the less you too, we will admit.
Ben: Sure, okay, the last more. more incentives to businesses for being eco-friendly
Karen: What incentives?
Ben: Maybe paying less tax or something.
Karen: Hmm, okay

Ben: Well, I think it depends on the incentives and how good they are.
Karen: Yeah, the more incentives they offer, the more eco-friendly this will probably be.
Ben: Agree.
Karen: Okay, we have enough to talk about tomorrow.

Jack: Hey, Nick. I've always been worried that playing video games may be harmful, but I've read that they can
actually benefit students in some ways.
Nick: Really? How can they benefit students?
Jack: Well, playing video games can help a student's memory. They train the brain and improve its ability to
remember information, both in the short and long term.
Nick: That's fascinating! I never thought about it that way. What else did you find?
Jack: It seems that students can be inspired to teach others through games. My classmates always show each other
how to get through different levels, collect items, and combine elements to succeed. It's like they're learning to
help each other out, which I think is a great skill.
Nick: That's true. Our classmates do the same when they play with their friends. It's like they're learning
leadership without even realising it.
Jack: Exactly! In fact, games can improve those skills as well. When playing in groups, students take turns being
the leader and the follower, and playing online games exposes them to a variety of age groups and cultures.
Nick: It seems like a fantastic method to develop social skills. You know, my classmates made quite a few friends
through gaming.
Jack: Yes, games create a common interest that helps them make friends, both online and in person. It's more than
just having fun; it's about connecting with others.
Nick: I never thought of video games like that. It's nice to see there's more to it than just entertainment.
